Whiting Services (WSI) performed a complete control modernization to one of two 1953 vintage Whiting cranes, 100/25-ton, at a major railroad locomotive repair facility in Mexico.

The modernization included:

  • New motors
  • New brakes
  • Motor controls updated from wound-rotor to variable frequency drives
  • New conduit, wiring, control panels & junction boxes
  • New radio control system
  • Dynamic braking systems
  • New limit switches
  • New LED under crane lighting

The photo shows the cranes making a tandem lift of a locomotive that weighs approximately 200-tons. This facility performs this type of lift on a regular basis – about twice weekly. This is a testament to the robust design of the Whiting crane.

WSI’s modernization service extends the operational life of your equipment at minimal expense compared to replacement. Updating controls, drives, motors, or operator cabs with the latest technology increases the safety, reliability, and performance of your equipment while lowering overall operating costs.
